George's Postcard Note: The Duomo, Lucca, where Puccini (a local) apprenticed to his father the choir master, forces its personality on you like the opening scene in La Traviata! Lighting, rhythm, sets and performance all come together in one Italian architectural façade. Each row of columns has its own spacing and scale to take the eye upwards. Each column is decorated with heraldic designs in a variety of colors of marble. And one can’t ignore special windows and arched openings behind the colonnades. Are these openings for access or are they there for looks? – maybe both. Imagine priests in robes maneuvering the narrow walkways or the young trumpeters arriving to celebrate a special feast day!
