George's Postcard Note: A hot wind was blowing in from Africa. After a morning on the beach, we drove west along the coast to Chania, ruled by the Venetians in the 15th and 16th centuries. Their influence is everywhere in the old city. Along with hundreds of restaurants ringing the port, old Venetian facades mix with Moorish details, including a small mosque. Fig trees and pines cascade down a cliff side topped by the Venetian fortress. I did this from the end of a jetty in the late afternoon, a look back at the old city. The light was changing to dusk. Nearby, a young Arab boy was fishing.
